Watch the Gap Between Spot and Derivatives

Not every rally—or sell-off—has the same foundation.
A move driven by sustained spot demand can behave differently from one dominated by leveraged derivatives positions. That is why traders often compare price action with funding rates, open interest, basis, and liquidation activity.
Questions worth asking:
- Is open interest rising faster than spot volume?
- Are funding rates becoming unusually one-sided?
- Is leverage building near a major technical level?
- Are liquidations accelerating the move?
- Does spot demand continue after leveraged positions reset?
Derivatives data can reveal market pressure, but it should be interpreted carefully. Extreme positioning can persist—and crowded trades can unwind quickly.
Digital-asset derivatives carry substantial risk and may not be suitable for all participants.
